Welcome to the web site for Stonehouse History Group

- promoting  interest in the History of Stonehouse & the locality.

The recent photograph of Stonehouse Church hall looks very sad compared to the black and white picture above, taken between the wars.

The Hall  built in 1933, has been used for many events over the years, in the late 1960’s it was a very popular venue for some of the best beat groups in the UK.

The Wednesday night dance was the place to go, it was called the Beat Scene, many of the UK’s most famous groups and singers came to Stonehouse to strut their stuff on the stage of the Church Hall. The hall was always packed to the rafters.

The Swingin Blue Jeans, The Moody Blues, Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, Pinkertons Assorted Colours, The Spectres, Dave Berry, Screaming Lord Sutch to name but a few, all had their moment on that stage.

On March 29th 1967 the night Simon Dupree and the big Sound were there, they brought along a BBC 2 film crew who were making a documentary about groupies for the series called Man Alive. It was 6 shillings and sixpence (32p) entry and you could get soft drinks from the coke bar and refreshments too.

There was a DJ and the records were supplied by R Lewis Ltd the local record shop just up the road in Quietways.
